Documentation · Chapter 06

Respect what is
generated automatically.

runtime contains the installed engine, working storage, and calculated configuration. It is not where application code belongs.

No real secret is required: we configure reading-list with safe values.

How app.php appears

  1. PHPAML reads .env and phpaml.json.
  2. It selects final values and normalizes paths.
  3. It writes runtime/config/app.php with restrictive permissions.
  4. If the result is identical, it does not rewrite the file unnecessarily.
phpaml — zsh
<?php

// Generated by PHPAML. Do not edit.
return [
    // configuration calculée / calculated configuration
];

Why not edit it?

Your fix would disappear on the next generation and would not be shared because runtime is ignored by Git. Edit the source: phpaml.json for shared choices, .env for local values.

Check your understanding: If runtime is deleted, is src code lost?

No. src belongs to the application. The engine can be reinstalled with aml install. However, back up any application data stored under runtime before deletion.
